July 8, 1947.
The Roswell Army Air Field issued a press release announcing the recovery of a “flying disc” from a ranch near Roswell, New Mexico.
Within hours, the statement was withdrawn.
A second release from Eighth Air Force Headquarters claimed the debris was from a weather balloon.
The recovered materials were sent to Fort Worth Army Air Field for examination.
Photographs of the debris were published in newspapers across the United States.
Witness accounts described metallic fragments scattered across the Foster Ranch.
The U.S. Army Air Forces officially closed the case, attributing the incident to balloon Project MOGUL in later reports.
Despite the clarification, the initial 1947 press release remains one of the most cited documents in 20th-century American history.
