Story

The Mary Celeste was discovered drifting in the Atlantic Ocean, midway between Portugal and the Azores.

Her sails were partly set.
The cargo — 1,701 barrels of industrial alcohol — was untouched.
There was no sign of struggle, no fire, no water damage.

The lifeboat was missing.
So were Captain Benjamin Briggs, his wife, their daughter, and seven crew members.

The ship had departed from New York bound for Genoa, sighted days later by the Dei Gratia under calm weather.
The logbook ended abruptly.
No further trace of the crew was ever found.

 

The Mary Celeste was towed to Gibraltar for investigation.
The inquiry concluded only this: the ship had been found “abandoned under mysterious circumstances.
